Badi or Nature school is a day learning centre situated in
Chennekothapalli. This was the first centre to be started
by the Collective - November 1992. It is run in a small village
chavdi that has been leased by the local government free of
cost. It is central to all the learning centres run by the
Collective. 85 children from landless, marginal farming or
petty business families attend this school. Here academic
classes are from 1st to 10th standard. Craft classes include
tailoring, embroidery, wool-work, basket making and science
toys. Children learn the traditional art forms of Kolattam,
Chekkabhajana, Tabala, singing, dancing and dramas. Origami,
clay-modeling and painting takes place almost everyday. The
children get lunch and evening snacks with good amounts of
fruits and vegetables. Significant attention is given to health
and hygiene aspects. After completing their education in this
centre, children have been joining government high schools,
colleges or some enterprises.
Over the
years Financial support for this centre has been received
from ACTION AID - UK, MISEREOR - Germany through NEG - New
Delhi, TDH - Germany and ASHA. Many individuals, friends
and supporters have also supported in many different ways. |
